Un po' di storia sul David di Michelangelo La storia del David inizia con un blocco di pietra portato a Firenze in barca attraverso il Mediterraneo e poi l'Arno dalla cava Fantiscritti a Carrara, questo blocco è stato conservato per anni in attesa di essere scolpito. A metà del Quattrocento i dirigenti dell'Opera del Duomo e i consoli dell'Arte della Lana di Firenze promuovevano un progetto ambizioso che consisteva nello scolpire dodici figure per decorare l'esterno della Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore oggi conosciuta come Duomo di Firenze. Questo blocco di marmo di 5.50 metri fu chiamato "il gigante" dopo che nel 1460 Agostino di Duccio e Antonio Rossellino hanno cercato di scolpirlo senza successo. All'inizio del Cinquecento il progetto venne ripreso valutando i nomi degli artisti del momento come Andrea Sansovino, Leonardo da Vinci e Michelangelo Buonarroti. Nel 1501, il Duomo di Firenze commissionò questo progetto a Michelangelo che, scolpi il David da settembre del 1501 fino a maggio del 1504, dando come risultato questa icona del Rinascimento. Il David è alto poco più di 5 metri e supera le cinque tonnellate. Il David è considerato l'apice del lavoro scultoreo di Michelangelo. Dove si trova il David di Michelangelo? Il David di Michelangelo si trova attualmente nella Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze. Nel 1910, il David che si trovava all' aperto in Piazza della Signoria fu trasferito alla Galleria dell'Accademia per evitarne il deterioramento, e il David che attualmente vediamo in questa piazza è una copia dell'originale, e ne è autore Luigi Arrighetti, scultore di Sesto Fiorentino. La terza copia è al centro del Piazzale Michelangelo dal 1846 ed è realizzata in bronzo
