Ritenuta di Epigono, scultore di corte della dinastia dei sovrani di Pergamo. Fu una delle opere scultoree dell'antichità più note e, per questo motivo, fu spesso ripresa da molti artisti di epoche successive. La versione capitolina venne scoperta all'inizio del xvii secolo, durante gli scavi di Villa Ludovisi. La prima testimonianza del ritrovamento risale al 1623, quando l'opera venne registrata quale parte della collezione della potente famiglia romana. La capacità dell'artista e il phatos della scultura suscitarono una grande ammirazione tra gli amanti dell'arte del XVII e del XVIII secolo tant'è che molti tra re e ricchi proprietari terrieri ne commissionarono una copia. Fu proprio durante quest'epoca che alcuni, fraintendendo il tema dell'opera, ritennero si trattasse di un gladiatore morente. Ciò diede vita a tutta una serie di denominazioni non corrette, Durante la campagna napoleonica in Italia, nel 1797, fu portata a Parigi per volontà di Napoleone. La statua ritornò poi a Roma nel 1815, dopo il Congresso di Vienna, e da allora è esposta ai Musei Capitolini.
