Una leggenda piemontese vuole che Glicine in origine fosse una pastorella perseguitata dalla tristezza e dalla malinconia. Solo l'amore dei suoi animali riusciva a consolarla. Un giorno la sua disperazione fu così tanta da ispirarle un pianto senza fine, durante il quale le sue lacrime cominciarono a trasformarsi in fiori viola e i suoi arti in numerosi rami. Qui si ritrova un motivo molto ricorrente nella mitologia e nella tradizione popolare: ovvero quello della ninfa o dell'essere femminile che si tramuta poi in albero o fiore. Questo tema risale probabilmente ai primordi del politeismo europeo, quando le credenze animistiche che riconoscevano nella natura la manifestazione delle forze femminili della creatività e della fecondità, erano ancora molto importanti.
