Il gaucho è il mandriano delle pampa dell'America meridionale, propriamente del cosiddetto Cono Sud. I gaucho (pl. gauchos in lingua originale) si trovano in Argentina, nel dipartimento boliviano di Tarija, nella Regione Sud del Brasile, in Paraguay, in Uruguay e in Cile. In quest'ultimo Paese è noto con il nome di huaso. È possibile dire che il gaucho sia nato nella Pampa orientale attorno al XVIII secolo. Il termine forse deriva dall'arabo, "uomo a cavallo", o più probabilmente dal quechua huacho (pronuncia: huaccio) "senza madre". Viene descritto come un "selvaggio bianco che vive lontano dalla società", un "nomade a cavallo" e rappresenta un'importante figura nella storia delle pampas sudamericane.
