L'opera principale esposta nella sala dell'Orcagna da Febbraio 2014 è la maestosa “Incoronazione della Vergine” di Jacopo di Cione, restaurata nel corso del 2011 per l'interessante mostra “Denaro e Bellezza” ospitata a Palazzo Strozzi. Il dipinto è noto a Firenze come “Incoronazione della Zecca” poiché fu commissionato dagli ufficiali della magistratura fiorentina che soprintendevano al conio del Fiorino intorno al 1373. La grande tavola a fondo oro fu collocata nell'antica sede della Zecca vicina a Palazzo dei Priori, fino al 1863, poi trasferita agli Uffizi e infine alla Galleria dell'Accademia. Nella splendida Pala, l'incoronazione della Vergine si svolge su un piano elegante rialzato rispetto ai Santi protettori della città di Firenze. Si riconoscono, da sinistra: San Giovanni Battista, in piedi, Santa Caterina con la palma del martirio, S. Anna raffigurata col modellino della Firenze fortificata, San Matteo, protettore dell'Arte del Cambio, San Vittore papa con la tiara papale. Quest'ultimo santo fu particolarmente venerato dai fiorentini in occasione della vittoria sui pisani nella battaglia di Cascina il 28 Luglio 1364. Da sinistra si riconoscono invece San Giovanni Evangelista in piedi, protettore dell'Arte di Calimala, Santa Reparata, S. Antonio abate in abito scuro, San Barnaba in tunica verde e San Zanobi col cappello vescovile. Anche la devozione per S. Barnaba si collega ad un'importante vittoria dei guelfi nella battaglia di Campaldino l'11 Giugno 1289. Al di sopra della preziosa cornice ornata da colonnine tortili e pinnacoli, assistono alla scena i profeti Isaia in abito amaranto ed Ezechiele, in tunica verde. Il profondo significato devozionale del soggetto religioso si fonde con il senso civico e politico rappresentato dai simboli nella preziosa cornice intagliata, dorata e dipinta. Il gradino della pala in basso è ornato alle estremità da due scudi con l'arme della Zecca e da nove stemmi al centro. Essi celebrano da sinistra la famiglia Alberti, l'Arte di Calimala, il Giglio di Firenze, lo stemma angioino, il Sigillo di Firenze, l'emblema degli Angiò Durazzo, la Parte Guelfa, l'Arte del Cambio e infine l'arme della famiglia Davanzati. Nel 1373, al momento della commissione della pala, erano in carica Bartolomeo di Carroccio Alberti (iscritto all'Arte di Calimala) e Davanzato di Giovanni Davanzati (iscritto all'Arte del Cambio) come ufficiali supervisori della monetazione.
