È una scultura lignea conservata nella cappella Gondi di Santa Maria Novella a Firenze. Secondo la testimonianza del Vasari quest'opera venne scolpita dal 1410 al 1415, in risposta al Crocifisso ligneo di Donatello di Santa Croce a Firenze, verso il quale il Brunelleschi aveva manifestato critiche per l'esasperato naturalismo e che aveva definito un «contadino in croce » invece che un corpo simile a Gesù Cristo, che in tutte le sue parti fu il più perfetto uomo che fosse mai nato. Sfidato così da Donatello a fare di meglio, il Brunelleschi scolpì quest'opera in maniera completamente diversa, non solo all'insegna della compostezza e di una solenne gravitas, ma di una esigente lettura teologica. Rispetto all'opera di Donatello è infatti più idealizzato e misurato e la perfezione matematica delle forme, rifacentesi all'uomo ideale di Vitruvio, è anche eco della perfezione divina del soggetto. Le braccia aperte misurano quanto l'altezza della figura, la linea del naso punta al baricentro dell'ombelico, ecc. Brunelleschi si rifece al crocifisso di Giotto, ma rielaborò la figura di Cristo non più in stazione retta, bensì piegato sulla croce. L'opera è caratterizzata da un attento studio dell'anatomia e delle proporzioni, con un risultato all'insegna dell'essenziale (ispirata all'antico), che esalta la dignità sublime e l'armonia dell'opera. Come nella Croce di Giotto niente è casuale o prodotto da un parto improvviso della fantasia, ma è invece il frutto di una rielaborazione continua, razionale e teologica, motivata sull'ordine del mondo e delle sue cose.(smn.opere)
