Voluto da San Giovanni Bosco ed edificato nel 1868, il Santuario di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice si trova nel quartiere di Valdocco, non distante da Piazza Statuto. Il progetto della basilica fu fatto dall'ingegner Antonio Spezia sul modello di S. Giorgio Maggiore a Venezia del Palladio. Oggi, come all'epoca, il santuario è centro di aggregazione gestito dai salesiani con tante attività ed incontri dedicati ai ragazzi. La facciata della chiesa è in stile rinascimentale e si ispira a quella del Palladio a Venezia. L'interno della chiesa è a forma di croce latina. Da vedere assolutamente è il grande affresco di Maria Ausiliatrice che si trova sopra il tabernacolo. Il dipinto, opera dell'artista Tommaso Lorenzone, fu voluto da Don Bosco. Il dipinto della cupola, di altrettanta splendida fattura, è invece opera di Giuseppe Rollini. La basilica è decorata in marmi policromi che ne esaltano ancora di più la bellezza. Da vedere anche l'organo a canne che si trova accanto all'altare maggiore e che fu costruito da Giovanni Tamburini nel 1941. All'interno della chiesa, nei quattro altari, si trovano le spoglie di quattro personaggi importantissimi per i salesiani: Don Bosco, il suo successore Michele Rua, il quindicenne allivevo di don Bosco proclamato santo nel 1954 Domenico Savio e infine le spoglie di Maria Mazzarello, fondatrice delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice e Salesiane. Nello spazio di fronte la Basilica di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice si trova il monumento a don Bosco, realizzato da Gaetano Cellini nel 1920. La chiesa di Maria Ausiliatrice è un luogo dall'alto valore simbolico e religioso a Torino perché legata alla figura di Don Giovanni Bosco, ma lo è anche dal punto di vista artistico ed architettonico. Vale sicuramente la pena fare un piccolo giro per poterla ammirare.
