La specie presenta un dimorfismo sessuale evidente: la femmina è bruno-grigia, mentre il maschio è di un marrone più marcato, con una macchia nera sotto la gola e macchioline anch'esse nere diffuse su tutto il petto.La Passera sarda è presente, con la sottospecie nominale P. h. hispaniolensis in Spagna, Balcani, Grecia e porzione settentrionale del continente africano, dal Marocco alla Libia. In Italia la si ritrova in Sardegna, ma anche con distribuzione relativamente ampia in Sicilia, ove occupa aree dal livello del mare fino ai 1.000 (in Sardegna) o 1.900 metri di quota (in Sicilia).
