Anemone significa “fiore del vento”, per il temperamento delle sue corolle che ondeggiano lievi anche con la più blanda brezza. Nella mitologia greca, Anemone era un'affascinante ninfa. Di lei si erano innamorati due venti: Zefiro, che soffia in primavera e Borea, freddo di tramontana. I due, nella lotta per contendersi l'amata, scatenarono bufere e tempeste, facendo arrabbiare Flora (Dea della vegetazione) che, ingelosita, scagliò un incantesimo su Anemone, trasformandola in un fiore e legandola ai suoi spasimanti per sempre. La corte di Zefiro, delicato vento di primavera, l'avrebbe fatta schiudere; mentre le carezze di Borea, vento freddo, l'avrebbe portata a disperdere precocemente i petali. Secondo la leggenda, per questa ragione è un fiore di breve durata.
