Spesso negli ambienti sani subito dopo una pioggia abbondante i lombrichi escono dal sottosuolo e vanno in esplorazione sopra il suolo. Il suolo del bosco e dei campi dell'agricoltura biologica senza i lombrichi non sarebbe come lo conosciamo. Loro "mangiano il terreno" per assorbire le sostanze organiche qui presenti, scavano gallerie e il terreno che restituiscono con le deiezioni è morbido. Spesso vengono in superficie per rilasciare le deiezioni e formano quei caratteristici coni di terra morbida. Questo favorisce la formazione di humus e l'aerazione del suolo. L'acqua della pioggia entra nel suolo più facilmente. L'agricoltura meccanizzata con l'uso di grossi aratri e di pesticidi non favorisce la vita dei lombrichi. Un campo coltrato a fondo con la terra rovesciata al sole è una natura morta.
