Siamo nel deserto di Atacama (Cile), a circa quaranta minuti di macchina da San Pedro de Atacama. Quindi quaranta minuti di strade che sembrano lastre di sabbia compatta e rocce che sembrano vetro. Qui siamo in un piccolo villaggio dove ci si ferma per un pranzo veloce tra negozietti e qualche ristorante improvvisato per chi è di passaggio. Tutto intorno a noi c'è il deserto, uno dei più intriganti deserti che io abbia mai visto. D'altronde, il deserto ha sempre qualcosa da dire nel suo silenzio. Intorno al deserto i confini sono così: da una parte le Ande, da cui arriva la roccia che questo scultore sta lavorando, e dall'altra l'oceano Pacifico, che poi più di tanto pacifico non è nell'infrangersi sulle coste. I confini delle case invece sono in adobe: delle specie di mura in mattoni, dove i mattoni sono terra battuta e paglia. Non piove mai, quindi tengono discretamente bene.
