L'inizio dei lavori di edificazione del Tempio Malatestiano voluto dal signore di Rimini, Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, risale al 1447. Il progetto prevedeva il rinnovo e la ristrutturazione di una precedente chiesa francescana. Sigismondo intende costruire due cappelle, per sé e per la futura moglie Isotta degli Atti, facendo diventare l'edificio una tomba di famiglia. Nel 1450 iniziano i lavori esterni a cura di Leon Battista Alberti, il quale non interviene sulle mura della vecchia basilica francescana ma la 'ricopre' con un rivestimento marmoreo ispirato all'età classica. Il Tempio rimane incompiuto principalmente a causa della mancanza di finanze di Sigismondo, intorno al 1460. Il progetto finale dell'edificio, rappresentato nella medaglia di Matteo de' Pasti, include un fastigio nella parte superiore della facciata, una copertura a volta e una cupola nell'intersezione tra la parte longitudinale e il transetto, che avrebbe dovuto illuminare l'edificio. La struttura si innalza su un podio decorato a girali con all'interno elementi araldici malatestiani. I più frequenti sono: la rosa, l'elefante, lo scudo, la sigla SI. La facciata ricorda l'Arco d'Augusto per i particolari che si ispirano all'età classica. Il portale timpanato, all'interno dell'arco centrale, decorato con marmi policromi e motivi geometrici, è incorniciato da girali che alludono alla ricchezza della famiglia. Nella cornice della facciata un'iscrizione latina recita: SIGISMVNDVS PANDVLFVS MALATESTA. PANDVLFI. F. V. FECIT. ANNO. GRATIE. MCCCCL. Essa dichiara che Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta ha costruito l'edificio nel 1450; analogamente due iscrizioni in greco su entrambe le fiancate dedicano la costruzione a Dio e alla città. Nel secondo ordine della facciata si può notare chiaramente la sottostante basilica francescana in mattoni. Questo particolare è osservabile anche nelle fiancate laterali: le finestre gotiche della primitiva chiesa non sono inquadrate negli archi plastici del Tempio, i quali poggiano su pilastri e ricordano vagamente le arcate del ponte di Tiberio. Nella sequenza degli archi del lato destro sono posti i sarcofagi di quattro personaggi illustri della corte malatestiana. Le tombe di Pandolfo e della sua sposa, si trovano all'interno del tempio.
