Mergellina (Margellìna in napoletano) è una zona della città di Napoli, nel quartiere Chiaia, che si estende tra il largo Sermoneta e la Torretta, lambendo Piedigrotta e la riviera di Chiaia. Si trova in riva al mare, ai piedi della collina di Posillipo. Secondo alcuni il nome deriva dal termine "mergoglino" (uccello acquatico); secondo altri invece dalla bellezza delle sue acque e cioè dal latino "mare ialinum", che significa mare chiaro, trasparente.[1] In realtà il nome comune margella ("corallo") è già presente nel tardo-latino e traduce il greco bizantino ???????? (Charles du Fresne du Cange, Glossarium manuale ad scriptores mediae et infimae latinitatis etc. T. IV, p. 574. Halle, 1776); quindi margellina equivarrebbe a corallina, ossia "marina corallina". Non è da escludere infatti che la costa di Posillipo fosse anticamente pescosa di corallo come quella di Torre del Greco.
