Per chi non lo conoscesse si tratta del frutto del corbezzolo(Arbutus unedo), un albero di piccole dimensioni e dal lucido fogliame tipico della macchia mediterranea.
Ha conservato il nome che gli era stato attribuito da Plinio:"Arbutus"(arbusto?) è infatti il termine con cui i romani individuavano il corbezzolo; "unedo" alluderebbe invece al sapore dei frutti dei quali "unum tantum edo"(ne mangio uno e non di più!)per il sapore fortemente acido dei frutti immaturi. Ben maturi però non sono male.
