Si tratta di un effetto ottico e perché si verifichi servono nuvole composte da goccioline d'acqua di dimensioni uniformi, un punto d'appoggio che sia sullo stesso livello delle nuvole, un osservatore e la luce del sole alle sue spalle. Si può osservare più facilmente in montagna, come nel caso di questa foto. La luce del sole proietta sulle nuvole l'ombra dell'osservatore, che sembrerà ingigantita rispetto agli oggetti nel campo visivo di chi osserva. Le nuvole sono più vicine di quanto le percepisca il nostro occhio: ci aspetteremmo che l'ombra sia piccola ma invece la vediamo molto più grande. Questo combinato con l'arcobaleno crea un effetto davvero particolare. Insomma, è come 'specchiarsi' nelle nuvole. Si chiama gloria. Spettro di Brocken è il suo nome storico: Brocken è una montagna tedesca dove questo fenomeno è stato osservato più volte.
