Durante questo viaggio ho avuto la fortuna di essere testimone di un aspetto abbastanza peculiare della cultura Sami - il mercato del bestiame. Praticamente tutte le renne della Lapponia fanno parte di allevamenti Sami, ma sono lasciate libere di pascolare per tutto il vasto territorio lappone: solo in alcune occasioni esse vengono radunate con battute in motoslitta che durano più giorni e costrette ad entrare dentro dei sistemi di recinti collegati tra loro e sempre più piccoli, all'interno dei quali gli allevatori appartenenti alle varie famiglie Sami separano i propri capi da quelli dei "colleghi" riconoscendoli tramite una particolare marchiatura effettuata con un taglio all'orecchio. I capi di bestiame non marchiati sono quelli nati nei periodi in cui gli animali vivono praticamente liberi, e appartengono di diritto al capo Sami presso il quale essi vengono radunati: essi vengono catturati (senza ausilio di altri strumenti se non le nude mani), immobilizzati e dopo una veloce asta acquistati e marchiati temporaneamente tramite una vernice spray colorata. Ritrovarsi dentro i recinti, con le renne spaventate che correvano tutto intorno immerse nella luce del tramonto artico, è stata un'emozione sicuramente intensa, che spero di trasmettervi almeno in parte con questo scatto.
