La Macchina di Santa Rosa è il baldacchino trionfale che innalza al di sopra dei tetti di Viterbo la statua di Santa Rosa, patrona della città. Essa assume oggi la forma di una torre illuminata da fiaccole e luci elettriche, realizzata in metalli leggeri e in materiali moderni quali la vetroresina (che hanno sostituito da diversi anni il ferro, il legno e la cartapesta); è alta circa trenta metri, pesante cinquantuno quintali (5.100 kg), e sempre culmina con la statua della Santa. La sera del 3 settembre di ogni anno, a Viterbo, la macchina viene sollevata e portata in processione a spalle da un centinaio di uomini detti "Facchini di Santa Rosa" lungo un percorso di poco più di un chilometro articolato tra le vie, talvolta molto strette, e le piazze del centro cittadino, immerse in un suggestivo buio nel quale solo la Macchina risplende sfarzosamente illuminata. Il trasporto, scandito dal grido di devoto entusiasmo "Viva Santa Rosa", rievoca simbolicamente la traslazione della salma di Santa Rosa, avvenuta a Viterbo nel 1258 per disposizione di Papa Alessandro IV, dalla Chiesa di Santa Maria in Poggio (detta della Crocetta) alla chiesa di Santa Maria delle Rose (oggi Santuario di Santa Rosa).[1] La festa rientra nella Rete delle grandi macchine a spalla italiane,[2] dal 2013 inserita nel Patrimonio orale e immateriale dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.
