Le foglie di questa pianta acquatica si alzano al di sopra dell'acqua e i suoi fiori profumati, su peduncoli lunghi, si aprono all'alba e si chiudono al tramonto. Gli steli, le foglie, i petali, i semi e i rizomi sono commestibili. I cinesi ritengono che rizoma, foglia e semi rallentino il processo di invecchiamento e che siano cibi dimagranti. Il succo rinfrescante del rizoma viene bevuto contro acne ed eczemi, mentre la polpa della radice si usa contro la nausea. I semi sono un cardiotonico e le foglie rinfrescanti curano le insolazioni e riducono la febbre. Gli stami dorati sono al profumo di tè. Il seme è bianco dall'epidermide marrone. In Giappone il rizoma ispessito è consumato come verdura. I fiori vengono offerti alle divinità in molte religioni e sono coltivati per ragioni votive.
