La basilica di Sant'Ambrogio (basilega de Sant Ambroeus in dialetto milanese), il cui nome completo è basilica romana minore collegiata abbaziale prepositurale di Sant'Ambrogio[1] (nome originario paleocristianobasilica martyrum), è una delle più antiche chiese di Milano e si trova in piazza Sant'Ambrogio. Essa rappresenta ad oggi non solo un monumento dell'epoca paleocristiana e medievale, ma anche un punto fondamentale della storia milanese e della Chiesa ambrosiana. Essa è tradizionalmente considerata la seconda chiesa per importanza della città di Milano. Edificata tra il 379 e il 386 per volere del vescovo di Milano Ambrogio, fu costruita in una zona in cui erano stati sepolti i cristiani martirizzati dalle persecuzioni romane. Per questo venne dedicata ai martiri ed era chiamata Basilica Martyrum: lo stesso Ambrogio voleva riporvi tutte le reliquie dei santi martiri Vittore, Nabore, Felice, Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio. Sant'Ambrogio stesso vi venne sepolto (397) e da allora cambiò nome, assumendo quello attuale. La basilica attuale rispetta scrupolosamente la pianta di questa basilica paleocristiana: tre navate absidate, senza transetto, con quadriportico antistante. Nel 784 l'arcivescovo di Milano Pietro fondò un'abbazia benedettina, approvata da Carlo Magno nel 789. A questa fu aggiunta una canonica, che doveva servire le necessità della comunità laica della città. (estratto Wikipedia)
