Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale il Monte Piana (2324 m) fu il teatro di combattimenti tra Italiani ed Austriaci. La punta nord era occupata dagli Austriaci e quella più a sud dagli Italiani. Le postazioni, le trincee e le gallerie di entrambi fronti si trovarono a pochi metri di distanza. Tra italiani e austriaci vi persero la vita 14.000 soldati che sono seppelliti al Cimitero di Guerra Sorgenti.
