Nave Scuola Amerigo Vespucci, l'Unità più anziana in servizio nella Marina Militare interamente costruita e allestita presso il Regio Cantiere Navale di Castellamare di Stabia. Impostato lo scafo il 12 maggio 1930, è stata varata il 22 febbraio 1931; madrina del varo è stata la signora Elena Cerio. Consegnata alla Regia Marina il 26 maggio 1931, entrò in servizio come Nave Scuola il successivo 6 giugno, aggiungendosi alla gemella Cristoforo Colombo (in realtà leggermente più piccola), di tre anni più anziana, e costituendo con essa la "Divisione Navi Scuola" al comando dell'Ammiraglio Cavagnari. Al rientro dalla prima Campagna di Istruzione, il 15 ottobre 1931 ricevette a Genova la Bandiera di Combattimento, offerta dal locale Gruppo UNUCI (Unione Nazionale Ufficiali in Congedo d'Italia). Il motto della nave è "Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera", assegnato nel 1978; originariamente il motto era "Per la Patria e per il Re", già appartenuto al precedente Amerigo Vespucci, sostituito una prima volta, dopo il secondo conflitto mondiale, con "Saldi nella furia dei venti e degli eventi", infine con quello attuale. Dal punto di vista tecnico-costruttivo l'Amerigo Vespucci è una Nave a Vela con motore; dal punto di vista dell'attrezzatura velica è "armata a Nave", quindi con tre alberi verticali, trinchetto, maestra e mezzana, tutti dotati di pennoni e vele quadre, più il bompresso sporgente a prora, a tutti gli effetti un quarto albero. L'unità è inoltre fornita di vele di taglio: i fiocchi, a prora, fra il bompresso e il trinchetto, gli stralli, fra trinchetto e maestra e fra maestra e mezzana, e la randa, dotata di boma e picco, sulla mezzana.
