Situata al V miglio della Via Appia Antica, la Villa dei Quintili, il più grande complesso residenziale del suburbio di Roma, fa parte del Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica. Grazie al rinvenimento di una tubatura in piombo recante il nome dei proprietari, è certo che il complesso appartenesse ai fratelli Sesto Quintilio Condiano e Sesto Quintilio Valerio Massimo, membri di una famiglia senatoria e consoli nel 151 d.C. I Quintili furono fatti uccidere dall'imperatore Commodo nel 182-183 d.C. per aver ordito una congiura contro di lui, così la residenza sull'Appia fu confiscata e divenne proprietà imperiale. Da allora Commodo stesso e altri imperatori dopo di lui vissero nella villa. Testimonianze della loro presenza sono l'imponenza dell'architettura, la ricchezza delle decorazioni scultoree e la raffinatezza dei rivestimenti parietali e pavimentali in lastre di marmo colorato, tuttora splendidamente conservati. In origine si accedeva alla Villa dall'Appia Antica attraverso un ampio giardino porticato dotato di un ninfeo monumentale trasformato poi in fortezza in età medievale.
