Via Caracciolo e la statua equestre che ha dato nome alla Rotonda ? a Rotonda Diaz, luogo iconico del lungomare napoletano, prende il nome dalla statua equestre che la domina tra il mare e la Villa Comunale: il generale Armando Diaz a cavallo, posto su un basamento in pietra, si affaccia su via Francesco Caracciolo (strada intitolata ad un'altra figura storica della città, l'ammiraglio ed eroe della Repubblica partenopea impiccato da Nelson all'albero maestro nel 1799 e gettato nelle acque del Golfo di Napoli). Di epoca fascista, il monumento a Diaz fu proposto già alla fine degli anni Venti. A volerla fu il commendatore Domenico Arena, ex funzionario dell'amministrazione finanziaria e padre di due ufficiali caduti nella Grande Guerra. Non fu subito chiaro dove posizionarla: le possibilità di scelta erano il Rione Carità, piazza Principe di Napoli, il parco di Posillipo e piazza Vittoria. Diaz era infatti chiamato anche “Duca della Vittoria” perché fu tra gli artefici della vittoria della Prima guerra mondiale. Nel 1933 fu pubblicato il bando di concorso: il monumento, affiancato da due fontane circolari, alla fine fu progettato dall'architetto livornese Gino Cancellotti con lo scultore Francesco Nagni e fu inaugurato il 29 maggio 1936. Un filmato dell'Istituto Luce mostra il taglio del nastro ufficiale alla presenza delle autorità: la statua equestre è in bronzo ed è alta circa 5 metri; il basamento, di quasi dieci metri, è così elevato per permetterne la visione anche dal mare. Uno stemma littorio di casa Savoia accompagna l'epigrafe: “Al maresciallo Armando Diaz Duca della Vittoria la Patria Riconoscente 1939. XIIII.E.F.” Ai lati vi sono bassorilievi che sintetizzano momenti di guerra. È inoltre riportato integralmente il testo del bollettino della Vittoria. Armando Diaz nacque a Napoli nel 1861 da una famiglia di origine spagnola arrivata in città con i Borbone. Iniziò la sua carriera militare con l'artiglieria e nel corso degli anni salì pian piano di grado, fino ad arrivare ai livelli più alti quando l'Italia entrò in guerra, prendendo parte al Comando Supremo. Si fece valere in numerose battaglie dal 1916 e divenne Capo dello Stato Maggiore del Regio Esercito, scelto soprattutto per le sue particolari doti umane e la sua capacità di alzare il morale dei soldati e motivarli in battaglia. Fu tra le menti strategiche che portarono alla vittoria epocale contro gli austriaci nella battaglia di Vittorio Veneto. Dopo la guerra, si schierò con la nascente dittatura fascista e divenne Ministro della Guerra.
