Ayrton... proveniente dalla Lotus con cui aveva corso per 3 stagioni... in questo suo primo anno alla McLaren partirà 13 volte in pole position e vincendo 8 Gran Premi sui 16 in calendario si aggiudicherà il suo primo Titolo Mondiale.
