Nel 1874, il Comune di Roma, ricopriva la carica di sindaco Luigi Pianciani, realizzò una serie di fontanelle pubbliche. Costruite in ghisa, alte circa 120 cm. e pesanti 100 kg., le fontanelle, di uso gratuito, erano provviste di tre bocchette a forma di drago; l'acqua terminava la caduta nel condotto fognario, attraverso una grata a livello stradale. Negli anni seguenti, il disegno delle fontanelle venne modificato: le tre bocchette decorate lasciarono il posto ad un unico cannello liscio. La forma del cannello è all'origine del soprannome, “nasone”, che i romani hanno attribuito alle fontanelle. Qualche bocchetta a forma di drago si può ancora trovare in piazza della Rotonda, in via di San Teodoro, alle spalle del Foro Romano, e in via delle Tre Cannelle. I “nasoni” romani superano per numero le 2000 unità, e offrono refrigerio con la stessa acqua che scorre nelle abitazioni; molto fresca, anzi, per il continuo scorrere. A Roma, ci sono anche delle fontanelle costruite in travertino; vengono chiamate “della lupa imperiale”, dato che l'acqua fuoriusciva da una testa di lupa in ottone. Questa tipologia di fontane venne installata negli anni '20 e '30; ne rimangono in funzione una settantina, localizzate nei parchi romani e al Villaggio Oilimpico. La bocchetta di tutte le fontanelle ha un piccolo foro nella parte superiore.
