Dopo due secoli di viceregno spagnolo e trent'anni di dominazione austriaca, nel 1734, con la salita al trono di Carlo di Borbone, Napoli ritorna ad essere capitale di un regno indipendente: il nuovo re decide di approntare un riassetto urbano della città e tra le varie idee quella di costruire un palazzo dove ospitare una collezione di opere d'arte, la cosiddetta collezione Farnese, iniziata da papa Paolo III nel XVI secolo e continuata dai suoi discendenti, ereditata dalla madre Elisabetta Farnese e ancora divisa tra Roma e Parma, anche perché al Palazzo Reale non era mai stata realizzata una galleria d'arte. Il luogo prescelto per la costruzione dell'edificio è la collina di Capodimonte, una zona boschiva di Napoli, ricca di selvaggina, con l'intenzione di affiancare all'uso museale anche un luogo dove risiedere durante le battute di caccia: la collina inoltre offre panorami sul Vesuvio, su San Martino e su Posillipo.
