I monaci in Myanmar indossano abiti di un bellissimo rosso scuro simile al colore dei pistilli dello zafferano, le monache vestono di rosa e, a volte, di giallo: i colori dell'alba. Le monache già da piccole vengono rasate perché i capelli sono un dono della natura che le può rendere attraenti. I monaci birmani sono circa mezzo milione, le monache circa 75.000 in un paese che conta poco più di 53 milioni di abitanti. I monasteri e i monaci hanno un ruolo determinante per quanto riguarda l'istruzione: 1190 scuole monastiche accolgono oltre 100.000 bambini e ragazzi orfani o appartenenti a famiglie bisognose.
