L'esterno neoclassico di Sant'Isacco esprime al meglio la tradizionale formula russo-bizantina di una pianta a croce greca con una grande cupola centrale e quattro cupole laterali. Le porte hanno una lavorazione a rilievo modellate sulle porte del Battistero di San Giovanni a Firenze. ammalia con la sua cupola dorata e con le icone realizzare a mosaico, oltre che con la facciata decorata con sculture e 112 colonne corinzie rosse composte da singoli pezzi di granito dal peso di 80 tonnellate. Sono 48 le colonne che si trovano a livello del suolo, 24 sorreggono la cupola superiore, 8 ciascuna delle quattro cupole laterali, e 2 inquadrando ciascuna delle quattro finestre.
