Si potrebbe dire che la Cattedrale di Sant'Isacco è la più sontuosa e grandiosa delle chiese di San Pietroburgo. Terminata nel 1858, è uno dei monumenti neoclassici più importanti dell'architettura russa del XIX secolo.Si trova nel centro della città, nella piazza che porta lo stesso nome, e vicino al corso Neva e al Museo dell'Hermitage. Ha una delle cupole più grandi al mondo ed è la seconda chiesa ortodossa più alta del mondo, con 101,5 metri di altezza dietro alla Cattedrale del Cristo Salvatore di Mosca, che raggiunge i 103 metri. Prima, nella zona che occupa l'attuale cattedrale, vi era una piccola chiesa di legno dedicata al monaco Sant'Isacco di Dalmazia, che è stata sostituita da un'altra di pietra scomparsa a metà del XVIII secolo. L'attuale Cattedrale di Sant'Isacco inizia ad essere costruita nel 1818 dall'architetto francese Auguste Montferrand. Per la cupola, di 21,8 metri di altezza, sono stati usati circa 100 chili di oro. La cattedrale è adornata da 400 opere fra sculture, dipinti e mosaici. Durante la II Guerra Mondiale, la cupola è stata verniciata di grigio per evitare di attrarre gli aerei nemici. La cattedrale ha una capacità di 8.000 persone ed è visitata annualmente da circa 1 milione di turisti. Dal 1931, la cattedrale è un museo. Si può salire fino alla cima della cupola fino al cosiddetto Colonnato della Cattedrale, da dove si può ammirare una spettacolare vista di San Pietroburgo.
