Tomba Giuditta Sommaruga opera di Giannino Castiglioni... Il monumento è situato all'ingresso della Galleria BG superiore, nell'ala di Ponente; ai lati di un austero sarcofago procedono dieci figure femminili velate, in atteggiamento di preghiera. Benché a un primo sguardo le donne sembrino identiche, in realtà esse si differenziano nelle fattezze dei volti, giovani o più maturi, probabilmente in allusione alle diverse fasi della vita. Il monumento è infine inserito all'interno di una nicchia decorata da un prezioso mosaico a tessere dorate e verdi-azzurre e da una semplice croce in ferro. Giuditta Sommaruga (1875-1964) fu una nota filantropa milanese: erede dello stabilimento ortofrutticolo fondato dagli antenati Longoni nella seconda metà del Settecento, nel 1964 la donna decise di lasciare il proprio ingente patrimonio in eredità all'Ospedale Maggiore di Milano, a condizione che il terreno venisse utilizzato per l'edificazione di un padiglione ospedaliero intitolato alla figlia, Emilietta Faini (1902-1941), tumulata nella medesima sepoltura. Dopo vari passaggi di proprietà, il terreno è stato infine destinato all'edificazione del nuovo Palazzo della Regione Lombardia, inaugurato nel 2011. Lo scultore Giannino Castiglioni (1884-1971) fornisce in quest'opera un altro saggio del suo stile più caratteristico, improntato a una classicità solenne e severa, e, allo stesso tempo, di grande realismo.
