Nel dialetto catanese si utilizza il termine "Li Cuti" per indicare delle formazioni di origine lavica o degli scogli sottoposti all'azione erosiva del mare; ulteriore sinonimo è "Li Cutulisci" (che però viene tradotto con "scogli lisci, levigati"). Tale apposizione ha evidentemente risentito sia della natura dei luoghi che dell'influenza di due vocaboli latini entrambi di genere femminile plurale particolarmente appropriati: "cautes - cautis", che assume tra i suoi significati quelli di "scogliera, scogli, faraglioni o dirupi affioranti dall'acqua"; "cos - cotis", che può riferirsi sia alla comune "cote" intesa come "pietra focaia", sia per esteso a qualsiasi "pietra dura o particolarmente tagliente". Il promontorio basaltico dove il castello sorge, è costituito da colate laviche sottomarine (pillow) che hanno un'età radiometrica di circa 500.000 anni dal presente. La rupe basaltica è circondata da una colata lavica di epoca preistorica che nella storiografia del XIX secolo era stata attribuita in maniera errata all'eruzione del 1169. Storicamente un primo castello fu edificato nel VII secolo d.C. (secondo altri nel VI secolo) dai bizantini su di una preesistente fortificazione di periodo romano forse del 38 d.C. e chiamato Castrum Jacis e volto alla difesa della popolazione dalle scorrerie.
