La facciata della Passione fu iniziata nel 1954 secondo i disegni e le spiegazioni che Gaudí aveva lasciato. Le torri furono terminate nel 1976 e da allora si è lavorato alla decorazione scultorea. Gaudí progettò questa facciata durante la convalescenza dalla febbre maltese a Puigcerdà nel 1911.[45] Dedicata alla passione di Gesù, intende riflettere la sofferenza di Cristo nella sua crocifissione, come riscatto dei peccati degli uomini. Gaudí concepì pertanto una facciata più austera e semplificata, senza ornamenti, in cui si distingue la nudità della pietra, in modo da somigliare a uno scheletro, ridotta alle semplici linee delle sue ossa. Include solo le sculture del ciclo della Passione di Gesù di Josep Maria Subirachs, che ideò una serie semplice e schematica, con forme angolari che causano un effetto drammatico. Subirachs realizzò la sua opera tra il 1987 e il 2009. Gaudí stesso descrisse la sua concezione della facciata della Passione in questo modo: «Qualcuno ha trovato questa porta troppo stravagante, ma voglio fare paura, e per ottenerlo non risparmio il chiaroscuro, in modo che, entrando e uscendo, tutto assuma un effetto più cupo. Inoltre, sono disposto a sacrificare la stessa costruzione, a rompere archi e tagliare colonne al fine di dare un'idea di come sia cruento il sacrificio.
