San Pietroburgo, simile ad una collana preziosa, è circondata dalle citta-satelliti, dove sono situate le famose residenze estive degli imperatori russi. Molte di esse sorgono parallelamente alla costruzione di Pietroburgo. Per volere dello zar Pietro I dovevano incorniciare dignitosamente la nuova capitale del paese. Ciascuna delle residenze è uno spettacolo artistico unico che continua a custodire l'atmosfera del passato. In ogni residenza si sono incarnati i gusti di varie epoche storiche. In primo luogo va ricordata la residenza di Peterhof, tanto amata da Pietro il Grande.Il palazzo Grande unisce il parco Superiore a quello Inferiore. Subì un radicale rifacimento nella seconda meta del'700 da parte del grande Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, che gli conferì il grandioso aspetto attuale. L'architetto ingrandì la costruzione petroviana, aggiunse le gallerie laterali e due padiglioni, sormontati dalle guglie dorate. A ovest del palazzo sta il padiglione dell'Aquila imperiale, innalzata in cima all'altezza di 27 m l'aquila ha tre teste, perciò da qualsiasi parte si vede sempre l'aquila bicipite. La composizione architettonica del palazzo è chiusa a est dalla cappella imperiale.
