Questo monastero è famoso per avere ospitato per parecchi anni sant'Antonio da Padova, fornendogli una preparazione e una cultura che lo forgeranno tutta la vita. Figlio dei nobili Martino de' Buglioni e donna Maria Taveira, Fernando, questo il nome di sant'Antonio al battesimo, era entrato nel monastero agostiniano di São Vicente, fuori le mura di Lisbona, per vivere l'ideale evangelico senza compromessi. La chiesa de Santa Cruz (conosciuta anche come Monastero di Santa Cruz, in portoghese Mosteiro de Santa Cruz), risale al 1131, ed è uno dei monumenti più importanti di Coimbra, e non solo perché vi sono custodite le salme dei primi due re del Portogallo.
