Questo ponte è stato erroneamente identificato, per lungo tempo, come un'opera di epoca medioevale. L'architetto e archeologo Giambattista Carducci lo ha riconosciuto come sicura costruzione romana dell'età repubblicana, riscontrando affinità di fabbricazione con altri ponti coevi realizzati lungo la strada consolare Salaria. Con molta probabilità questa opera di collegamento tra le due sponde del Castellano era l'uscita orientale della strada Salaria che un tempo attraversava trasversalmente tutta la città di Ascoli. Il ponte attuale è la ricostruzione integrale dell'originario, avvenuta negli anni 60, con l'impiego dello stesso materiale recuperato nelle acque del torrente sottostante. Il vecchio ponte fu distrutto, nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, dai guastatori tedeschi il 16 giugno 1944 insieme al Ponte Maggiore, durante la ritirata. Ancora oggi è possibile percorrerlo a piedi e fruire della congiuntura tra il centro della città con il quartiere di Porta Maggiore. Secondo la leggenda e la tradizione popolare, la denominazione di questa opera sarebbe da mettere in correlazione con Cecco d'Ascoli, poeta ed astrologo, cui si attribuisce la costruzione del ponte avvenuta in una sola notte con l'aiuto del diavolo. Alcuni studiosi sostengono, invece, che l'appellativo di Cecco abbia corrispondenza con il nome di Cecco Aprutino, maestro medioevale, che lo avrebbe ristrutturato, nel 1349, su commissione di Galeotto I Malatesta.
