Costruita nel VIII secolo la moschea Al-Aqsa fa parte della Spianata delle Moschee (Haram al-Sharif) nel centro antico di Gerusalemme. Si tratta della moschea più grande della Città Sacra e terzo luogo sacro dell'Islam, dopo La Mecca e Medina. Secondo la tradizione islamica, si tratta dei luoghi del isra e mi'raj del profeta Maometto.
