Un tempo diffuso in un'area vastissima, il guanaco sopravvive allo stato selvatico solo nelle regioni andine comprese tra il Perú meridionale e la Terra del Fuoco, in praterie e arbusteti dalla pianura ai 4000 metri di altitudine. Allevato per la lana, simile a quella della vigogna anche se meno fine, vive per lo più allo stato domestico. Raggiunge un'altezza di 130 centimetri e pesa 60-75 chilogrammi. Il colore del manto varia da marrone a rossiccio nella parte superiore del corpo ed è più chiaro in quella inferiore. Il guanaco è erbivoro e si adatta a ogni genere di vegetale; predilige le zone aride e può resistere a lungo senza bere. L'organizzazione sociale ricalca 3 modelli: gruppi familiari composti da un maschio, alcune femmine e i piccoli; gruppi di soli maschi giovani; individui isolati. La gestazione dura 11 mesi, l'allattamento da 11 a 15; i piccoli raggiungono la maturità sessuale verso i 2 anni. (Fonte: www.sapere.it).
