OK, the seal had disappeared and was to the right, under the cliffs. But there was this friendly happy grey fat face looking up at me, for a few seconds, welcoming me to the Unesco 'Global Geopark' (one of only 7 in the entire UK), that includes the main towns forming Devon's famous 'English Riviera' yesterday afternoon. Somewhere I'd never been to before. The area has one of the most temperate climates in the UK, too, helping give its 'Riviera' feel.
With all the police, now army, many dressed in chemical suits only seen in horror science fiction films in my locked down my home Salisbury, a week after the attempted poisoning of the Russian double agent and his daughter, both who are still critically ill, it's all claustrophobic - and political, with Government Ministers wanting evidence of Kremlin intervention.
So, unsurprisingly, yesterday early morning, I decided to go as far west as I could, in one single day, for the price of a train trip to London, westwards. Which was where the weather was going to break first.
This is towards the end of my LONG day, very hilly, the sun going hazy, subduing the colours, but still a beautiful, refreshing scene, at least for March - and in the summer, you just wouldn't be able to move from the tourists and visitors.
The South West Coast Path climbs out of Torquay northwards just to the left, at the top of the cliffs. That's another day, another walk.
