La torre dell'Orologio di Smirne (in turco: Izmir Saat Kulesi) è una torre dell'orologio storica situata in piazza Konak, nel quartiere omonimo della città di Smirne (Izmir) in Turchia. La torre dell'orologio è stata progettata dall'architetto francese levantino Raymond Charles Père e fu costruita nel 1901 per commemorare il 25° anniversario dell'ascesa al trono di Abdulhamid II (che regnò l'impero ottomano dal 1876 al 1909). L'orologio fu un regalo da parte dell'imperatore tedesco Guglielmo II (il quale regnò dal 1888 al 1918). La torre dell'orologio di Smirne è decorata con un'elaborata architettura in stile ottomano, ha uno scheletro di ferro e piombo ed è alta 25 metri. Dispone di quattro fontane (Sadirvan), che sono poste attorno alla base con un modello circolare. Le colonne sono ispirate a temi moreschi. La torre dell'Orologio di Smirne ha una tale importanza simbolica per la città e per l'intera Turchia che è stata raffigurata sul retro delle banconote da 500 lire turche dal 1983 al 1989. Nelle ex province balcaniche dell'Impero ottomano, in particolare nelle attuali città serbe, bosniache e montenegrine come Belgrado, Prijepolje, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Gradačac e Stara Varos, esistono ancora torri dell'orologio simili risalenti all'epoca ottomana, che sono chiamate Sahat Kula (la parola deriva proprio dalla traduzione di “Torre dell'Orologio” in turco, osia Saat Kulesi). La piazza su cui si trova la torre dell'Orologio di Smirne è la piazza Konak, cuore del distretto omonimo. La piazza è il centro nevralgico della città, in quanto Konak rappresenta il centro di Smirne. La maggior parte della piazza è occupata dal governatorato della provincia, dal municipio, dalla stazione degli autobus e dalla moschea Yali. La torre dell'orologio si erge proprio al centro della piazza, che è frequentatissima a ogni ora del giorno da turisti e residenti. Tratto da www.volia1euro.it
