La riserva delle Shimba Hills è un ambiente assolutamente unico, è infatti l'unico caso di foresta pluviale nell'area sub shariana.È un'area importante per la biodiversità delle piante: oltre il 50% delle 159 piante rare in Kenya si trovano nelle colline dello Shimba, comprese alcune specie in via di estinzione di cicadee e orchidee. È anche un sito di importanza nazionale per uccelli e farfalle, ma sopratutto contiene l'unica popolazione del Kenya di Antilope nera. Ce ne sono circa 100 nel parco. Purtroppo non siamo risuciti a vedere questa antilope ma abbiamo fatto il nostro primo avvistamento di un animale dalle sembianze preistoriche , ma che grazie al blockbuster "Il re Leone" ha portato al nostro immaginario come il simpatico Pumba!
