L'Aventino, dove sorge la Basilica di Santa Sabina, è un luogo molto legato alle origini di Roma. Secondo la leggenda nel 753, mentre Romolo scelse il colle Palatino, Remo preferì l' Aventino come sede per la fondazione della città. L'altura, isolata e difesa da mura, divenne presto zona di attività commerciale e così il quartiere si popolò di sontuose dimore, templi ed oratori dedicati ai "sacra peregrina" ovvero ai culti professati dalle diverse genti qui confluite. Intensa doveva essere anche la vita religiosa della comunità cristiana: le matrone si riunivano nelle varie "domus " tra le quali vi era anche quella che accoglierà le spoglie di Sabina. All'interno la chiesa è chiaramente ad impianto basilicale a tre navate, divise da colonne antiche provenienti da un monumento tardo-imperiale, da una grande abside semicircolare in corrispondenza della navata maggiore. Dei rifacimenti barocchi rimangono soltanto le due cappelle laterali a pianta quadrangolare coperte a cupola, dedicate a san Giacinto (a destra) e a Caterina da Siena (a sinistra). La parte superiore della navata centrale, dotata di un moderno soffitto a cassettoni (1938), era un tempo rivestita da mosaici. Il pavimento è coperto da numerose lastre tombali. In prossimità del presbiterio vi è la Schola Cantorum, ricostruita nel 1936 su ispirazione di quella originaria paleocristiana del IX secolo. All'interno della Schola Cantorum è presente una lastra derivata dal coperchio della cassa marmorea che racchiudeva le reliquie di Santa Sabina ed altri martiri. L'abside era anch'essa decorata a mosaico e, nel catino absidale, vi è un affresco del 1569 di Taddeo Zuccari, raffigurante Gesù, gli Apostoli e i Santi sepolti nella Basilica.
