Via Manzoni, ore 7 del mattino, io e la mia reflex siamo già a caccia. Arrivano due taxi, un gruppo numeroso di ospiti stranieri, scende al Grand Hotel et de Milan.E' il più prestigioso della nostra Milano, eccovi, una breve storia e alcuni personaggi, che vi hanno soggiornato chi, a lungo, chi solo di passaggio. Il Grand Hotel et de Milan, fu inaugurato il 23 maggio 1863. Il progetto venne affidato all'architetto Andrea Pizzala, noto soprattutto per aver realizzato nel 1831 la Galleria De Cristoforis, qui a Milano. L'edificio si espanse a più riprese e nel 1879 venne aggiunto un nuovo piano per un totale di circa duecento locali, un ascensore idraulico “Stigler” (ripristinato nel recente restauro ed attualmente funzionante), un giardinetto d'inverno e saloni da pranzo lussuosamente arredati. Tra gli Ospiti più illustri del Grand Hotel et de Milan, possiamo citare il Maestro Giuseppe Verdi che qui scelse di soggiornare dal 1872, alternando così la vita cittadina e di lavoro, a quella tranquilla di Sant'Agata, la sua tenuta di campagna. Per Verdi il “Milan” era in una posizione strategica: a due passi dalla Scala e di fronte a via Bigli, dove abitava una sua grande amica, la Contessa Clara Maffei, famosa per aver dato vita al più famoso salotto milanese risorgimentale. Una gran folla sostò davanti al “Milan” nel periodo in cui Verdi era gravemente ammalato. La paglia fu sparsa su via Manzoni per attutire i rumori delle carrozze e dei cavalli, e non disturbare così l'agonia del Maestro Nel pomeriggio del 30 aprile 1888, l'allora proprietario dell'hotel signor Spatz, accoglieva con tutto il personale schierato le Loro Altezze Imperiali Dom Pedro II di Braganza e l'Imperatrice Teresa Cristina di Borbone. Nell'aprile del 1902 arrivò in hotel il grande tenore Enrico Caruso, che veniva a Milano per cantare alla Scala una nuova opera diretta da Toscanini. E arriviamo così agli anni venti. Una delle ospiti più straordinarie, vera figlia degli anni folli, fu la pittrice “femme fatale” Tamara de Lempicka, ospitata al Milan da Gabriele D'Annunzio. Il Grand Hotel et de Milan fu completamente rinnovato nel 1931 e dotato di bagni con moderni impianti sanitari, acqua corrente e telefono in ogni camera. Il suo elegantissimo American Bar era frequentato dalla migliore società. Il ristorante, già allora il più rinomato di Milano, vantava inoltre una raffinata cucina ed un servizio impeccabile. Nel 1943, in seguito ad un terribile bombardamento (che colpì anche il Teatro alla Scala), tutto il quarto piano fu distrutto. Successivamente lo Stato Maggiore della 5° Armata americana requisì l'albergo. Il “Milan” divenne il luogo di vacanze premio per i soldati alleati, addirittura l'hotel ebbe un suo “Direttore Militare”. Maria Meneghini Callas venne spesso al Grand Hotel et de Milan tra il 1950 ed il 1952, in occasione delle recite al Teatro alla Scala. Lei e Meneghini, suo primo marito, erano capaci di discutere ore nella reception davanti alla cassetta di sicurezza aperta, per la scelta dei gioielli da indossare. Nel 1969, con la nuova gestione, l'intraprendente Manlio Bertazzoni decise che era tempo di riammodernare la hall e i saloni dell'hotel, per dare un tono più vivace agli arredi degli anni '40. La presenza della figlia Daniela e del suo compagno, il fotografo di moda Rocco Mancino, fece sì che il “Milan” diventasse un punto di riferimento per fotografi, modelle, stilisti, artisti e di tutto il “bel mondo” che vi gravitava attorno. Divenne set di riprese fotografiche e sfilate di moda. All'inizio degli anni '70 esplose il “prêt à porter” italiano e l'hotel consacrò la sua apertura alla Moda. Ferré ed il suo produttore Mattioli, fecero in hotel il loro primo defilé, e tanti altri furono qui “tenuti a battesimo” nel loro viaggio verso la celebrità. Si aprì così la grande stagione mondana con i tè concerto delle cinque pomeridiane, i cocktail Scaligeri del 7 dicembre ed i Gran Galà di San Silvestro. Il “Milan” fu sempre una sorta di “Dépendance” della Scala. Ospite abituale, Severino Gazzelloni, famoso flautista soprannominato “flauto d'oro”, era solito esercitarsi nel primo pomeriggio con i toni in sordina. Un'altro ospite abituale fu Vittorio De Sica. Nel 1974, per una scena del film “Il Viaggio” (dove recitava con Sophia Loren), fu allestita una camera da letto nel salotto dell'appartamento di Verdi. L'alcova fu occupata da Richard Burton e la giovane Annabella Incontrera. Spesso era possibile incontrare Burton nei salotti del bar a sorseggiare un bicchiere di vodka. Gli ultimi restauri, voluti dalla proprietaria Daniela Bertazzoni, hanno riportato il Grand Hotel al prestigio di antica casa milanese ottocentesca.
