Interno del castello di Sarre (Ao). La struttura, passata nei secoli attraverso varie proprietà, raggiunge il massimo splendore sotto Vittorio Emanuele II, il quale la trasformò in una delle sue residenze di caccia preferite. La galleria dei trofei al primo piano è l'ambiente più significativo del castello, presentandosi con parete decorate da centinaia di corna di stambecco (vere) e motivi floreali. L'intensa attività venatoria di quegli anni ridusse drasticamente la fauna locale e lo stambecco fu vicino all'estinzione. Per proteggere gli esemplari rimasti, il re Vittorio Emanuele III si dichiarò disposto a regalare allo Stato italiano i 2100 ettari della riserva di caccia di regia proprietà, purché vi creasse un parco nazionale. Il 3 dicembre 1922 veniva così istituito il primo parco nazionale italiano, quello del Gran Paradiso.
