Un altro scatto di Ben, della tribù dei Simbu. Il colore rossastro che macchia la bocca di Ben è dato dalla continua masticazione di noci di betel. La noce di betel è il seme di una palma, la "Areca catechu", ed è masticato in molti paesi dell'Asia, ma mai come in Papua Nuova Guinea ne ho visto fare un uso così smodato, sia da parte degli uomini che delle donne. Mediamente un individuo ne consuma dai venti ai quaranta al giorno, rendendo il commercio di questo seme uno dei più fiorenti dell'isola, con tanto di quotazioni flutuanti in base alla qualità del prodotto. In ogni mercato, strada o bazar in cui ci siano delle bancarelle o dei piccoli commercianti si puo essere certi di trovarne, e dato il suo alto valore commerciale, sovente le piantagioni sono sorvegliate da uomini armati. Le noci di betel oltre ad essere ricche di grassi, contengono diversi alcaloidi, tra cui l'arecaina e diversi tannini, uno detto kuni, è quello che da il tipico colore rosso. Queste sostanze hanno un azione cardiotonica e astringente che favorisce la digestione e stimola fortemente le secrezioni salivari. Per questo motivo in Papua Nuova Guinea è pieno di sputazzi rossi ovunque: per terra, sui muri, sui tronchi delle piante e qualsiasi altra superficie raggiungibile dagli sputi. In tanti luoghi pubblici, vicino al cartello "vietato fumare", c'è anche quello con scritto "vietato masticare betel", proprio per evitare che poi la gente sputi la saliva rossa in giro. La masticazione del betel migliora l'umore dando un blando senso di euforia e si dice abbia anche proprietà afrodisiache. Di contro, essendo usato abbinato a della calce, che spesso è prodotta con corallo bianco tritato finemente, erode irrimediabilmente i denti.
