Jharkhand, stato minerario dell'India nordorientale famoso soprattutto per l'estrazione del ferro. Da qui però proviene anche oltre la metà del carbone prodotto in India, ed è grazie soprattutto alle miniere di questo stato che l'India oggi figura come secondo produttore mondiale di carbone. Seconda solo alla Cina, l'India estrae dal suo sottosuolo una quantità tale di carbone sufficiente per il suo fabbisogno energetico e per i trasporti; il restante lo esporta in tutto il mondo. Il 90% delle miniere del Jarkhand, dove si lavora scavando incessantemente, è a cielo aperto, la maggior parte di esse è in autocombustione e sprigiona una enorme quantità di dionossido di carbonio, causa del global warming. Sono state distrutte intere foreste per fare posto a questa estrazione selvaggia e soddisfare un sempre crescente sviluppo del paese. Le concessioni per l'estrazione del carbone vengono concesse dal governo centrale e gestite da imprese statali e private, fenomeno che ha creato uno squilibrio sociale ed economico nella regione. Qui oggi tutto ruota attorno all'indotto minerario; una regione che in passato era in prevalenza agricola ora è stata interamente riconvertita all'estrazione del carbone. Molte persone sono senza lavoro, senza possibilità economiche sono costrette a lavorare illegalmente, in condizioni di sicurezza inesistenti e con la polizia governativa sempre alle costole. L'incremento vertiginoso dell'inquinamento dovuto all'estrazione selvaggia del carbone ha fatto sì che la popolazione soffra delle più gravi malattie respiratorie dal tumore ai polmoni alla silicosi, dalle più svariate tipologie di tubercolosi alle occlusioni delle vie respiratorie; inoltre si riscontrano malattie del sangue per inalazione di monossido di carbonio, disfunzioni cardiache e una vita media che non supera i 50 anni. In tutta la zona nascono villaggi in prossimità delle miniere di carbone a cielo aperto, con conseguenze devastanti per la popolazione, che vive senza le più basilari infrastrutture igenico-sanitarie, in baraccopoli prive di acqua corrente e di sistema fognario, dove l'aria è irrespirabile per le polveri sottili e per il monossido di carbonio generato dal carbone in combustione, in una situazione dove le infrastrutture locali e statali - che dovrebbero garantire un'assistenza sanitaria anche minima sono del tutto insufficienti e inadeguate. #BiancoeNero #BlackAndWhite
