Si tratta del coperchio di un sarcofago antropoide, in basanite (detta anche Pietra Bekhen), una roccia che, a differenza del basalto (con il quale spesso viene confusa), è povera di silice ma ricca in magnesio, ferro ed alcali. Estratta dalle cave nel Deserto Orientale (Wadi Hammamat) , e caratterizzata da un uniforme colore verde scuro fino al nero, rappresentò il materiale lapideo più pregiato della civiltà egizia. L'elemento che ha subito attirato la mia attenzione è lo scarabeo alato scolpito sul petto (per l'esattezza sopra il cuore, sede dell'intelligenza, per assicurarne la protezione), simbolo di rinascita e rigenerazione. Più in basso, al centro,finemente scolpite,si notano due colonne di geroglifici che elencano le offerte funerarie. Ho scelto un PDR dal basso per evidenziare la maestosità e l'austerità di questo fantastico pezzo di storia egizia, perfettamente conservato.
