Fatto erigere attorno alla metà del XIV secolo dal principe Cangrande II della Scala, dopo l'anfiteatro Arena è il più grandioso ed imponente monumento della città. Originariamente denominato Castello di San Martino in Aquaro, assunse il nome di Castello Vecchio quando un nuovo castello, ancora più grande ed imponente, venne fatto costruire dai Visconti sulla cima del colle di San Pietro. Catelvecchio è una fortezza molto vasta, che colpisce per il suo aspetto imponente e per la sua forma decisamente militare, accentuata dalle merlature che si susseguono lungo le mura e dalle sette torri angolari coperte, in cui l'antico uso residenziale è ancora oggi ben testimoniato dai resti dell'originaria decorazione a fresco visibile in alcune sale
