La chiesa collegiata di Santa Maria della Scala (nota anche come Duomo di Chieri), è la più grande nonché principale chiesa della città di Chieri. Il "Duomo" sorge su un sito dove in epoca romana si trovava un luogo di culto di Minerva, come testimonia un'ara rinvenuta nella cripta della chiesa attuale, sul quale venne costruita tra il IV e il V secolo una chiesa dedicata alla Vergine. Una nuova chiesa dedicata a Santa Maria venne costruita in forme romaniche per volere del Vescovo di Torino Landolfo, nel 1037. La chiesa gotica venne completamente ricostruita nelle forme attuali a partire dal 1405, forse ad opera di Bernardo da Venezia, e venne consacrata nel 1437. Subì rimaneggiamenti nelle cappelle laterali in epoca barocca e restauri di gusto neogotico nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento. L'interno si presenta a tre navate a cui si affiancano quindici cappelle laterali, in gran parte rimaneggiate in epoca barocca, in cui si conservano dipinti barocchi e fiamminghi. La grande Cappella dell'altare maggiore è dedicata all'Assunta, Santa Maria della Scala, titolare del Duomo ed effigiata nella vetrata centrale dell'abside, opera di Pompeo Bertini, 1881. Il grande altare sullo sfondo, in marmo nero di Como, è del 1875-80. Dello stesso periodo sono gli affreschi opera di Enrico Gamba: a destra, Lo sposalizio della Vergine, II transito della Madonna e a sinistra La Natività e La fuga in Egitto. Nelle due nicchie laterali si trovano due affreschi del Gamba: L'Annunciazione e L'Addolorata. Sulla sinistra, il monumento funebre a Prospero Balbo, opera di Giuseppe Bogliani (1837). Il grande crocifisso sull'altare è del '400, ed è attribuito a Baldino e Urbanino da Surso. Peccato per il buio assoluto che vi regna nell'interno, dove non si possono ammirare tutte le meraviglie esposte, fortunato sono stato ad aver incrociato il sacrestano che gentilmente mi ha acceso le luci dell'altare per cinque minuti (i faretti per illuminare l'intero edificio, mi ha spiegato, se sempre accesi hanno un costo di gestione troppo elevato).
