La Madrasah Shir-Dar delimita il lato est del Registan (parola che in tagiko significa “luogo sabbioso”), il centro commerciale della Samarcanda medievale, una piazza maestosa interamente occupata dal bazar dove venivano commerciate le merci della Via della Seta. Le imponenti madrasah (Uluğ Bek, Tilla-Kari e Shir-Dar) sono caratterizzate da una profusione quasi esagerata di maioliche, mosaici azzurri e vasti spazi armoniosi, formando insieme uno dei luoghi più straordinari di tutta l'Asia centrale. La Madrasa Shir Dar fu portata a termine nel 1636 dall'Emiro shaybanide Yalangtush, a imitazione della Madrasa di Uluğ Bek, salvo che per la decorazione dei leoni ruggenti, in clamorosa violazione delle tradizioni islamiche per cui è vietato rappresentare esseri viventi.
