Il maniero, pur essendo nato come dimora aristocratica, è stato munito di difese di tipo militare, come mura, merli e fossati. Il castello presenta infatti pianta rettangolare con uno spazioso cortile interno; ai quattro angoli sorgono torri difensive e l'aspetto di difesa accentuato dal largo fossato che lo circonda, nonché dai ponti levatoi e dall'imponenza della torre maggiore. Il Castello di San Martino vide le sue origini nell'anno 1411 quando il Cavaliere bolognese Bartolomeo Manzoli volle la costruzione dello stesso quale dimora aristocratica attorno all'antica torre degli Ariosti (che a sua volta, sorgeva al limitare della palude fin dal duecento).
